The Story of Heledd, Gwasg Gregynog, 1994

{Ed. Note: This is the latest from Books and Vines contributor Celtic (Neil)}.

The Story of Heledd is found in the Red Book of Hergest, taken from the Welsh saga poetry and believed to date from around the ninth or tenth century. The story (song) is narrated by the main character, Heledd.   Heledd is believed to be the last remaining member of the royal house of Powys, following the advance of the English and the many battles that ensued.  She mourns the loss of her family, especially her brothers – one of whom was King Cynddylan, who ruled in the seventh century.  Cynddylan’s death came when his hall was attacked and destroyed bringing an end to the royal court.

In this edition the song is translated and written in prose interspersed with poetry.  The tragic story of the end of a Welsh royal family is riveting and the engravings, from one of the UK’s best contemporary illustrators (Harry Brockway), are monumental in style and suit the text perfectly. Brockway is a sculptor and engraver.  He lives in Somerset where he works as a stone carver.  He has illustrated many books for, among others, The Folio Society, The Old Stile Press and a second, Mapping Golgotha, for Gwasg Gregynog.  The two-colour engravings in the Gregynog books are a combination of linocut and resingrave blocks.
