The Revelation of Saint John the Divine, Limited Editions Club, 1995

The Revelation of Saint John the Divine (also known as Book of Revelation or Apocalypse of John) is certainly one of the more intriguing books of the Bible. As an apocalyptic work, it contains prophetic accounts of visionary experiences with vivid symbolism and predictions of future events; ultimately focusing on good versus evil, divine judgement and on a World to Come (versus the present world). The end of time scenarios seem to receive the most attention from many, though most believers focus on the basic message of having faith that God (and so good) will triumph.

It was written at the height of Christians’ persecution at the hands of the Romans, late in the first century (A.D.). The work can be interpreted as a warning against conforming to the prevailing Roman society of the day, which John believed was beastly and sinful. As mentioned in the prospectus, The Revelation of Saint John the Divine cries passionately against the power of evil, exhorting Christians to resist such evil, even at the cost of martyrdom.  One thing is certain about Revelations; it inspired some of the greatest literary achievements in the Western Canon, including those from Dante and Milton.

Allan Rohan Crite (1910-2007) was an important African-American artist who was a devout Episcopalian. His religion influenced much of his work, obviously including this one. Hi work is in the Smithsonian, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

{Ed. Note: Sorry of the poor lighting on a couple of the pictures, and for the lack of more pictures, especially of the spine and cover. These were taken months ago with a less than stellar camera and with limited time. Remember that you can click the pictures below to enlarge them, which will give you a better view, especially when lighting is not great.}
